Choosing an Intermediary
We encourage you to know who you do business with. Here are a few tips for choosing a transportation intermediary compiled by Bob Skane at a TLC Conference in April, 2006.
- Ask the intermediary for their Motor Carrier License Number.
- How long have they been in business?
- Are they large enough to handle your needs?
- Are they small enough to give you personal attention?
- How many carriers have they contracted with?
- How long has current management been in place?
- Who are the principals?
- How long have they owned this brokerage?
- Have they owned/run any other brokerages?
- What is their Credit rating?
- Are they TIA members, or P3 Partners? It matters.
- Do they have a contingency insurance policy?
- Check their service references?
- Check their website for helpful information.
- Does their vision/mission statement please you?
- What is their target market? Does it fit with your needs?
- Have they been recognized with any industry awards or accolades?
- Spot check compliance information: request a fax of carrier insurance etc.
- Do all employees present themselves professionally when you call?
- Find out find out what kinds of relationships they have with their various customers.
- Check for financial stability.
