Choosing an Intermediary

We encourage you to know who you do business with. Here are a few tips for choosing a transportation intermediary compiled by Bob Skane at a recent TLC Conference in April, 2006.

  • Ask the intermediary for their MC number.
  • How long have they been in business?
  • Are they large enough to handle your needs?
  • Are they small enough to give you personal attention?
  • How many carriers have they contracted with?
  • How long has current management been in place?
  • Who are the principals?
  • How long have they owned this brokerage?
  • Have they owned/run any other brokerages?
  • What is their Credit rating?
  • Are they TIA members, or P3 Partners? It matters.
  • Do they have a contingency insurance policy?
  • Check their service references?
  • Check their website for helpful information.
  • Does their vision/mission statement please you?
  • What is their target market? Does it fit with your needs?
  • Have they been recognized with any industry awards or accolades?
  • Spot check compliance information - request a fax of carrier insurance etc.
  • Do all employees present themselves professionally when you call?
  • Find out find out what kinds of relationships they have with their various customers.
  • Check for financial stability.
